A 27-year-old man googles his name and finds his mug shot on the “Most Wanted” website of Northern California. Guilt and the desire to clear his name pushed him to surrender to the authorities.
Christopher Viatafa had no clue that he was listed as a fugitive by the police when he decided to search results after typing his name on Google. The reason for being wanted: alleged use of a gun in August 2013.
Viatafa turned himself over to the San Leandro police station after seeing his photo on the website of wanted criminals.
Viatafa was charged with assault with a deadly weapon, according to reports of the authorities.
According to the website, its purpose is to encourage public participation in solving crimes and enforcing the law anonymously. Most citizens are usually hesitant in sending in tips or reporting information concerning criminals for fear of being involved as a witness and becoming the object of retaliation.
