In the last seven years, we've always been on the sidelines of the annual procession of the image of the Black Nazarene - the biggest in the Philippines - reporting on the millions of devotees who try to touch the image of a life-sized, dark wooden sculpture of Jesus Christ carrying the cross which they believe is miraculous.
Last January 9, 2014, an estimated 10 million Filipino Catholics participated in a procession to celebrate the feast. The procession last 19 hours.
"Why would anyone risk their lives by going with a million people just to touch the statue of the Black Nazarene during its feast? And they even brought their children. Don't they fear for the lives of the little ones? Adults got hurt, and it's a big possibility that children might too. Good thing there's no kids got hurt. Think for others first before you act. I am not against to those who have strong devotion to the Black Nazarene. But when our devotion goes dangerous then it's a problem. Devotees are very careless, they don’t mind others might get hurt by doing their selfish acts.
They really believe that when they wipe their towels or handkerchiefs on the exact day of the feast, miracle will happen? That their favors and prayers will be answered? After all, it's their choice what to believe. But, do you remember the first one in The Ten Commandments? It is said, "I am the Lord your God, thou shall have no other gods before me." Speaking of, yesterday, I overheard my father and his friend talking about what happened in the feast of the Black Nazarene. One was not agree to people who risk their lives just to go there. He didn't believe in saints, I mean the sculptured ones, the one who are made by humans. Because he only believe in God, our creator. He added, we can ask for His help directly to Him, not to the statues or sculptures. He made me think twice and maybe he got a point. The best way to talk to God is directly to Him."
Peace guys! n\/
