Agaton: PH's First Typhoon Of The Year

9 provinces (Southern Leyte, Surigao del Norte, Siargao Island, Surigao del Sur, Dinagat Province, Agusan del Norte, Agusan del Sur, Davao Oriental and Compostella Valley) in Visayas and Mindanao still under storm signal no. 1 as "Agaton" maintained its speed and strength Friday afternoon while changing its direction from southwest to west and moving slowly toward Surigao provinces.

As of 4 p.m., the state weather bureau spotted Agaton 165 kilometers northeast of Hinatuan, Surigao del Sur or 190 km east of Surigao City, packing maximum sustained winds of 55 kilometers per hour (kph) near the center and is forecast to move westward at 5 kph.

Agaton is expected to make landfall in Region XIII or Caraga Region on Saturday if it maintains its movement and speed. After making landfall, Agaton is expected to weaken into a low pressure area, according to state weather forecaster Jun Galang.

Some communities have just received relief, after being cut off when the rains washed out bridges and landslides blocked roads in the region.

Agaton will continue to bring showers to the lower half of the country, mostly in the central and southern section.

"Visayas were just recovering from Typhoon Haiyan and another typhoon washed their homes again, a succession tragedy for them. Agaton destroys many homes and leaves another 34 dead people in Mindanao."
